The American Consulate General Mr.David Hopper when on a visit to Chennai couple of days back happened to watch the premiere of this movie in Satyam Cinemas and this is what he had to say –“…The energy and excitement of the action on the screen was equaled by the energy and passion of the audience…Neither in US nor in any other countries where I’ve lived, have I had such a cinema experience…. I thoroughly enjoyed watching this movie… “ (source: The Hindu, 18th June’07)-----this sums it all !!! if a man of one of the topmost cadre of the most sophisticated country of the world who can’t understand the language can enjoy like this, then others ??? (its upto you to imagine)
It Can never get bigger than this ! This line was the universal comment about SIVAJI-THE BOSS right from the day of pooja! And why not, If the team comprises of Rajini+Shankar+ARR and top technicians from the country unite for a mega project, the expectations for this movie is expected to be huge and it was huge! But the question is whether the movie has met the expectations, and the answer is “Ya it has just managed to in style “
“just managed” --- hmm I did use this word purposely because when I was in the interval break of the movie I really didn’t think that I would make this statement. But I rather we, stood up in chorus at the end of the movie to say “coooooooool”………..
SIVAJI-THE BOSS is nothing but a great team effort, a dream team to be precise with effective contribution from all the members and it is clearly visible in the screenplay..if one of the member fails at a point the others come to rescue firing on all directions and hence the success ! The key members for this success are Shankar(rightly the captain),Thotta tharani,ARR, KV Anand, Sujatha, and last but not the least, man of the movie-Superstar !
Before getting on to know about the performance of the above said members a peep on to the screenplay of the movie !
“enna pa murder case ah “ “ILLAI”… “thiruttu, brothal case ah” “ILLAI” …… “sex padam yedutthu internet la pottiya” “HMM ILLAI”…. “appo ennadhaan panniney? “ “MAKKALUKKU NALLADHU PANNINEN”…. “appo unna ulla pudichi poda vendiyadhu dhaan” ..”(A BIG LAUGH)”….. this confrontation in the very first scene of the movie says its story line…… The movie opens up in jail like this, followed by flashback… A wealthy US return, software system architect comes back to India with almost impossible dream of giving free education and health care to poor. The first half tells us how the hero fails totally in his mission and the second half portrays his win in a grand style. Pretty simple outline but a mega display ! Like the hero, the director also falls a bit in the first half but he lands safely in the hands of his colleagues viz. Thotta tharani , ARR and ever dependable Super star”….like everyone I had thought(infact mistaken) that the first half could’ve been better as it didn’t have any major part of the main story line, but I accepted my guilt, infact a few flaws in the slow and steady first half and a few logic missing sequences was made to forget in the second half ! And at the end of the movie,any sensible thinker would understand that therez no way that more of the main story theme or action sequences could have been kept in the first half. The movie ramps up like a super jet in the second half ! When these top technicians are at their best at a point of time, it can be called as second half of the movie- SIVAJI ! And the last 20 mins ……a treat for every one who can enjoy ! Let me not go deeper into the story line of the movie, Rajagopalan wants everyone’s mind to be fresh before they watch the movie. Regarding the performances of the individuals,
Suman suits his character as a tailor made shirt. His white n white with black coolers, rooky smile and a cool tone, he has lived as Adhiseshan, thanks to the mentor Shankar. It will go down as one of the best roles for Vivek, he appears with rajni in almost all scenes except for a few and songs ! His timing comedy with Rajni is a laugh riot at most of the places, and few mokkais too appear here and there.”chumma chinna pasanga yellam virala uyarthi punch dialogue pesuraan pa, nee inimey pesaadhey pa” , “ivar thalaila yaaro kaara kuzhambu oothitaanga pa” are some of the few where the theatre turns electric. The scene following rajni’s mms, and when rajni sells his car vivek proves that how good a character artist he is ! Shreya saran, she is sure to disturb many in their dreams. Modern fits or homely dresses, it suits her to perfection. Dance movements are also pretty good. Not letting her just to come as a doll in the movie but also giving her scope for acting in a couple of scenes including an important scene (which leads to the climax of movie) is shankar’s touch ! Bose Venkat, Manivannan, Raja, Raghuvaran,Vaidivukarasi all of them have done their part to perfection !
And about the technicians,
Let me start with Thotta Tharani, this man is sure to get an award at the highest level for this movie, I shud write a separate write up to describe about his works. Each song speaks a lot about his works and ofcourse Shankar touch written all over it. Be it the Vaaji song with a historical palace set up or the sahana song with amazing glass works(absolutely mind blowing) or the ballelakka song with typical village scent or the style song with refreshing sets. Hats off sir ! Not only the songs, his works speak for him in the climax as well (Central Govt could put an eye on this reg the originality of currency notes). Not to forget his works for the musical instrument shop, sivaji’s home etc etc, even microscopic thing had been taken care. The photograph of Suman along with Sonia Gandhi and Manmohan singh kept on his office table, to just show the man’s voice, is one of the example of the great Shankar-thotta tharani partnership !
KV Anand, no introduction needed for this man in India. One can see the same KV Anand whom we had known so far ! The apt lighting for every scene or song tells his mastery he learnt from the school of PC Sriram. The freshness in the face of Rajni,Shriya through out the movie, the camera angle he had chosen for the fight sequences, the long shot in new york, the crowd coverage, picturisation of all the songs,etc one can enumerate numerous things which portrays his potentials.
AR Rahman ! I know I’m no way fit to write a review for his work when he is at his best. Yes, he is at his best in Sivaji be it the Songs or the BG score. Starting from the title card where he gives a modern and fresh score for the SUPERSTAR logo, till the climax fight scene, its ARR all the way ! Its totally a new look Rahman for a Shankar movie and its proved again. The music he scores when the title card displays ‘Sivaji’ (which also comes during high voltage scenes), is simply best.I’m searching for the same to keep it as my ringing tone! When Rajni roars saying “FFFIINNNIISSSHHH……”, all high voltage sequences with suman, plead to explain Shreya, jail sequences and (gonna be world famous) climax get up, all the way ARR has given a new dimension.
Sujatha,actually I’m an ardent fan of this writer and I’ve admired about his knowledge! Few dialogues are noteworthy and few make us understand that still there are lot and lot of things around us that we don’t know ! The information regarding CPR, hawala, what black money can do/is doing to economy, mentioning of the docs involved in a plan approval etc is simply wonderful.dialogues like “indha ooru la rendu vishayatthai patthi pesa koodathu, onnu karpu, innono karuppu” , “kidaiccha ponnoda vaazhradhai vida, pudiccha ponnoda vazhradhu dhan better” , and the terrace conversation involving Rajni and vivek sujatha needs special mentioning !
पीटर heyn tells why he is shankar’s favourite in many fight sequences, though a few are a bit draggy. The climax fight sets the fire hard on the audiences. Antony could’ve done better in the first half where few parts are seen like been inserted, but he too compensates his patchy first half into a racy later half. Manish Malhotra is no doubt india’s best costume designer. All the costumes used here are just rocking.
Now about the architect of the movie, Shankar ! To be frank comparing to his previous BBs viz. Indian, Mudalvan the screenplay is weaker and it clearly shows in certain areas in first half where the master has inserted a few things to fill up the space, and like his prev movie ‘anniyan’ there are a few holes in the screenplay logic as well ! Also, one thing Shankar is said to have certainly missed is the grand opening which every SS movie has, which is awaited eagerly by millions of fans(he has compensated totally this in second half) ! But, like I said earlier, apart from these, right from frame one its shankar’s magic written all over the movie.The driving force behind all the above mentioned technicians to perform at their best is one word ‘shankar’. You can find the richness in every frame. The song picturisation is amazing, no one can match Shankar in this aspect ! Also the thinking cap of Shankar stretches by leaps and bounds. The way in which black money is converted to white money, the methods he proposes to eradicate white money from India(viz.money card), usage of latest technologies for the turn around of events viz.self destructive programs,mms etc its Shankar all the way ! Thanks Shankar, for letting us know how Rajni will look if he were an European! The amount of effort he has put in the “oru koodai sunlight” song just tells the whole story! But at the outset, Shankar who normally believes only in his script rather than the hero, has given equal importance to the hero as well. And ofcourse, this man hasn’t let down his director as well as his countless fans !
If you ask me whether it’s a Rajni starred Shankar film or Shankar directed Rajni film, its more of the latter, no doubt! Assisted by the top most technicians of the industry, Rajni has taken the onus of audience watching the screen without any other thoughts for 3 hours, and he has very much succeeded in that. In an interview, he said that “I’m just a puppet in this movie , all credit goes to Shankar! “ the statement shows the greatness and diplomacy of the man, but one can’t deny the fact that but for his presence this script would have been most feeble, as Shankar himself has said in a statement “he has penned down the screen play with only one man in mind- Super Star”. Sathyama solrenga , super star has carried the whole film on his shoulders with his mere presence. Be it,
· Displaying of his own styles, viz. in eating chewing gum(center fresh sales is gonna raise higher) , or tossing the coin or in the song sequences or when tapping of fingers at the end, everything is ‘cooooooooooooooooooool’…..
· Delivering a missionary’s speech when he expresses his dream to the big heads of the society or when he gives one infront of auditors
· Displaying stupendous humour in shreya’s house and with neighbours, when trying to become whiter,or when he attempts to suicide. “boova da,pappu boova” J…imitating MGR, Sivaji and Kamal….man you have proved that you’re still one of the best in comedy....the theatre just bursts into laughter
· Expressing love to Shreya trying to explain her
· Disappointment when approval is denied to him for his plan
· Anger when bribe is demanded
· Embarassment when he is made to give bribe and when he loses everything
· Terror in the fight sequences..the eyes says it all
· Heart filled sorrow when he speaks to raghuvaran and Shreya through mms
God ……I can just enumerate so many things…………..Apart from these there are many highlights of the movie as well..the Rajni-Suman sequence in the tea shop…to me the scene of the year (like the oonjal scene with Ramya in padayappa), the style in which he says “aadi nee oonum comedy keemedy pannlaye..idhu black मनी chellam…” and the scene in which he makes minister to sign the document …scene when suman gets arrested…..nothing but festival inside theatres !!! Idhu oru pakkam na, “kanna panninga dhaan da kootama varum, singam single ah dhan varum“ nu sollumbodhu its whistles all over….chumma adhirudhu la....Abirami complex 3 times, Albert 3 times, Trichy kalayarangam 4 times, even the theatre I watched, 2 times, these are not the number of shows but the no. of times “athiradee” songs had been played on the first day first show…As shankar had said only rajni can suit in this song …this song is one and only for rajini .. for more about this watch it yourself to experience…..it will go down as one of his best shot songs……… not to forget the climax block-the style and dialogue delivery, the villainous laughter, the way in which he says “naan MGR”……. “BOSS, mottai BOSS”. …..thalaivar thalaivar dhaan nga..i’m going for third time this week J ! Chumma rendu padam hit aagitaaley naalaya superstar ivan dhaan nu film kaatra pasangalukku matthiyil, I donno how this man, now being called the super star of the whole country, can be so down to earth ! the scenes in which he says “chumma kamalahaasan maadhiri aagi kaatren paaru” and the way he dances for a vijay song imitating vijay, naalaya superstar naan dhaanu orutthara orutthar thittikingraley, thambigala, konjam katthukonga ivar kiteerndhu!
Overall to sum up, Superstar+Shankar combination has given a true thorough entertainer and do watch it in theatres yourself to know it better. I found few people had given ill remarks about the movie for those who say that first half has nothing meaningful in that I’ve given explanation above and those who say its “not good , not upto expectations” , I’ve only a single piece of advice to them, “guess you’re expecting too much on everything in your life, which is out of scope, and this could only result in disappointment always….konjam kammi pannikonga! “….For all those who have read this till this point, first of all a big thanks for your patience! If you haven’t seen this movie, believe me , do watch it you’ll enjoy, and those who have watched it already and totally not agreeing with me, read the previous line again(friends wen a thing is accepted by thousands n if u don’t, I can just pity u), and for others- when next ?
